SETTING AND CONTEXT

During the service learning portion of the class, I worked with two other students to teach a class for the local community group, Artistic Abilities. The class consisted of five adult students with varying mental and physical disabilities. Our class met in the Art Education room on campus for five Mondays, at 1PM, over the course of the semester. The lesson plans we created incorporated everything from drawing and collage, to pottery and sculpture/mask making.

The students were around the 18-21 years old and they were all enthusiastic to be in class. Some liked certain projects more than others, of course, but they all remained engaged throughout each of the lessons.

  • Robert was very interested in mythological creatures and found a way to incorporate this into each of the activities.
  • Abby was partially blind, and therefore was most interested in the activities that incorporated a more tactile experience. She was especially excited about our vessel making lesson and the opportunity to work with clay.
  • Aaron was enthralled with the movie "Braveheart", partly because he liked the movie, and partly because of his Scottish heritage. Like Robert, Aaron tried to incorporate this interest into most of his projects.
  • Caitlyn was a boisterous young lady that really enjoyed experimenting with the different mediums. She usually didn't try to make her work representational, but rather create abstract forms and designs by just exploring the medium.
  • Spencer was a very quite individual. He didn't respond much to our inquiries, but we could tell that he was engaged in the art making process. For him, the act of praxis seemed to be relaxing and enjoyable.
